Acyclovir is an oral medication that is used for the treatment of shingles. Shingles results in inflammation and itching that is somewhat similar to chickenpox except that it is usually much more severe.

This treatment, which is taken two to five times per day as directed by your primary physician, will help to relieve the pain and itching associated with shingles.

Acyclovir is available as a pill or in liquid form. You can take the medication either with or without food, but the liquid form of Acyclovir should be shaken well in the bottle first.

It is recommended that you use a measuring spoon to get the most accurate dosage of liquid Acyclovir. It is also important to drink plenty of water and fluids while you are taking any form of Acyclovir.

Remember to go see your doctor before you decide to take any form of Acyclovir. He or she will be able to take into account your existing medical conditions to determine whether this medication is right for you.

Dosage is usually dependent on weight for children.

It is recommended that you take Acyclovir at the same time every day throughout the treatment. If you feel like the medication has had no effect or is causing side effects, then go see your doctor or a professional healthcare provider as soon as possible.

Side effects of this medication may include nausea, diarrhea, headaches or vomiting.

Prior to taking this medication, it is important to talk to your doctor if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in Acyclovir or if you suffer from kidney disease or a weakened immune system.

Do not use medications that contain  as it is similar to acyclovir and may interact with it negatively.
