Energy Efficiency and Heating Your Home

There are several things to consider when comparing the use of gas, electric, or space heaters in your home. To many, the most important aspect that comes to mind is the model’s energy efficiency. Here is a list of the best model in each category.

Gas Heaters

ENERGY STAR ranks the Air Ease A97DSMV Series Comfort Sync Control as one of this year’s most efficient options for gas furnaces, saving 21% over a baseline model. This unit uses modulating heat to warm your home more effectively than single and two-stage products. The fan motor’s variable speed also allows it to heat your home more evenly. It comes, as do all the items listed here, with a generous warranty.

Electric Heaters & Heat Pumps

If you’re in to energy efficiency, as in using what you pay for, any electric furnace or heat pump system in your home will leave you satisfied. This doesn’t always translate to lower energy costs, however, since electricity is the most expensive utility in most areas. But, if you want to run at maximum efficiency with an electric alternative to home heating, consider the AccuComfort™ Platinum 20 Heat Pump. This American Standard brand heat pump is one of their highest-ranked products in terms of efficiency. And, with a system like this, effective cooling for those warmer months is part of the package. The price will vary depending on the dealer near your area, but you can expect the installation costs to be cheaper than those of gas furnaces or heating systems.

Space Heaters

Using a space heater sparingly and not in addition to a central heating system can be a great way to stay warm while using less energy. If your heating needs are local and you’d like to just heat one room as efficiently as possible, you’ll find no better space heater/fan than Dyson’s AM05. You’ll also probably find no model that’s more expensive (there are MUCH cheaper alternatives). But, if you’re serious about having the best heater for the job and have $300 to spend, this Dyson is the way to go. The fact that the model also functions as a fan when you want it to might help you justify the cost. The thing also looks pretty awesome. It has no fan-blades or visible heating instruments, just a sculpturesque oval that sucks in air and, using Air Multiplier ™ technology, pumps it out, hot or cold, at a high volume.
